Project summary

The central aim of the project is to contribute to creation of a more flexible and a more responsive system of high quality master programmes and courses in chemistry that meet professional, employer and workplace needs and the wider desires of Serbian society. This aim will be achieved through meeting the following objectives.
1. Modification and regulation of learning outcomes and competences of existing master programmes in line with best EU practices
2. To modernise curriculum delivery and quality standards of the Master programmes in chemistry in line with the recommendations for the Euromaster label;
3. Development of new interdisciplinary master programmes at universities in Serbia
The project team will undertake a range of activities that will contribute to meeting these objectives.

These activities include:
 

  • the development and implementation of benchmarking and quality control/assurance procedures;
  • modernisation and harmonisation of curriculum outputs with best European practice;
  • updating academic and professional skills of Serbian faculty;
  • modernisation of IT and laboratory facilities;
  • development of teaching materials using e-technologies;
  • implementation of continuing professional development and lifelong learning strategies;
  • and stakeholder and thematic support network building.

Project outputs will be widely disseminated through workshops, seminars and a conference. Maximum use will be made of web-based social networking tools to widely discuss and highlight project achievements and outcomes. The focus of these activities being not only to train a cadre of excellence but to ensure that excellence is disseminated widely and adopted extensively in HEIs in Serbia. A master programme in Environmental Chemistry will be developed and accredited using the modernisation procedures developed and implemented in the initial stages of the project. The programme will be designed to directly address the agenda of sustainable environmental development in Serbia.

Objectives

Modernisation of Masters courses in Chemistry and Chemistry related programmes at universities in Serbia through the adoption of a flexible and more responsive system for the design of programmes that meet stakeholder needs.

  • To establish the application of ECTS to ensure harmonisation with European Standards
  • To establish a rigorous programme of staff training and resource development to aid the creation of effective teaching, learning and assessment systems.
  • To build academic, employer and professional networks that will guide programme development.
  • To improve existing and to develop a new Masters programme in Environmental Chemistry.
  • To promote the reform and modernisation of higher education in the partner countries
  • To enhance the quality and relevance of higher education in the partner countries
  • To build up the capacity of higher education institutions in the partner countries and the EU, in particular for international cooperation and for a permanent modernisation process, and to assist them in opening themselves up to society at large
  • To foster the reciprocal development of human resources
  • To enhance networking among higher education institutions and research institutes both in the partner and EU countries
  • To enhance mutual understanding between peoples and cultures of the EU and of the partner countries

Abstract
With the ever increasing progress and achievement in science and technology it is evident that higher education is under pressure to continue to produce new generations of highly skilled individuals who will be capable of contributing further intellectual and technical advances in the 21st century. Therefore, higher education (HE) systems around the globe are facing an enormous challenge to develop programmes that will help produce such scientific graduate leaders and the necessary new generations of scientists and technologists. Project aims to respond to current societal needs to develop and modernise existing Chemistry programmes in Serbia with a view of making programme outcomes consistent with best practice in the rest of Europe.
